AB Microfinance Bank is one of the leading national microfinance banks in Nigeria, licensed by the

CBN and backed by global investors like IFC and KfW.

While their USSD code (*389*755#) makes banking easy without internet, you first need to open and activate your account. This step is often done on the AB mobile app before USSD can function properly.

If you’re new to AB Microfinance, this guide will walk you through how to open an account on the app, set up your details, and prepare your account so you can later enjoy USSD banking anywhere.

Note: All steps here are tested and we couldn’t add the screenshot of the procedure because the app restrict the permission, so, follow the steps to be able to setup an AB MFB account easily.

  • Choose your preferred account type: Savings Account / Current Account

  • Complete the required personal details (name, date of birth, BVN, and ID as requested).
  • Submit and wait for account confirmation by SMS/email.

Step 3: Register as a New User

If you already opened your account at the branch but are just activating the app:

  • ATM card management

Why You Need the App Before USSD

The USSD (*389*755#) only works if your account is fully registered and linked to your mobile number.

Many new users get “Activation failed” errors when they skip the app setup. By opening or activating your AB account first through the app, you unlock the USSD menu later for:

  • Checking balance
  • Applying for loans
  • Transfers
  • Airtime/data top-ups

Quick Tips

  • Always use the same phone number for app registration and USSD to avoid errors.
  • Update your app regularly (latest version as of Sept 2025: 2.4.7).
  • If activation fails, visit the nearest AB branch for support.
  • For security, never share your password or USSD PIN.

Conclusion

Before you start dialing the AB USSD code for quick banking, make sure you’ve opened and activated your account on the app.

The AB Microfinance app (plus myABflex and Flex Token for security) gives you the foundation you need to enjoy seamless offline USSD banking afterward.
