TEFL Teaching Jobs Abroad 2026: Guide, Salaries and How to Apply

Paid English-teaching positions remain widely available across Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Latin America in September 2026, with many schools and programme operators accepting applications on a rolling basis or with deadlines extending through the autumn.

Typical monthly salaries range from ¥220,000–¥280,000 in Japan, 14,500–26,000 RMB in China, 2.3–2.7 million KRW in South Korea and tax-free packages of $3,500–$5,500 in the United Arab Emirates. Many positions also come with housing allowance, flights and health insurance.

Minimum requirements usually include a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, a 120-hour TEFL certificate, with Level 5 preferred for higher-paying markets, native or near-native English proficiency and, for some government programmes such as EPIK in South Korea, a clean criminal-record check.

The application process begins with obtaining the TEFL certificate if it is not already held, preparing a concise teaching-focused curriculum vitae and a short cover letter or video introduction, then submitting through specialised platforms such as TEFL.com, the EPIK or JET programme portals, or direct school websites.

Many recruiters conduct an initial online interview followed by a demonstration lesson.

Contracts commonly run for one academic year with the possibility of renewal. Peak hiring for spring 2027 starts in East Asia occurs between October and February, yet year-round openings exist in Vietnam, Thailand, Spain and parts of Latin America.

Candidates should verify visa sponsorship details early, confirm the exact start date and salary package in writing, and allow four to eight weeks for document legalisation and visa processing.

With dozens of live vacancies posted weekly, consistent applications to multiple verified employers remain the most reliable route to securing a paid teaching post abroad. Starting early also gives candidates enough time to complete certification, documentation and visa requirements without rushing the final stages.
