Riyadh Metro: A Major Public Transport Project

Riyadh Metro was approved in 2012 as part of the city’s Public Transport Project. In 2013, three consortia received the main construction contracts.

BACS, led by Bechtel, took responsibility for Lines 1 and 2. Arriyadh New Mobility, led by Ansaldo STS, was awarded Line 3, while the FAST consortium, led by FCC Construcción, received Lines 4, 5 and 6.

The original opening target was 2019, but the schedule slipped several times. City officials subsequently discussed completion around the end of 2023 or early 2024. The network eventually began opening in stages from late 2024.

The six-line system represents a major investment in urban transport, connecting different parts of the Saudi capital and supporting the city’s growing population.

Honeywell: From a Thermostat Patent to Global Industrial Technology

Honeywell’s origins date to 1885, when Albert Butz founded a Minneapolis company built around a thermostat patent. The business developed temperature-control technology before merging with Mark Honeywell’s heating-controls company in 1927.

In 1999, AlliedSignal merged with Honeywell and adopted the Honeywell name. The company subsequently expanded across industrial automation, building management, safety systems, aerospace and energy optimisation.

Vimal Kapur has served as Honeywell’s CEO since June 2023.

How Smart Rail Integration Works

Modern metro systems rely on more than trains, tracks and stations. They also require coordinated building controls, security monitoring, fire protection, ventilation and energy management.

  • Building management systems (BMS): Provide station managers with a unified view of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, electrical power and equipment.
  • Video analytics: Help detect people or objects on tracks and in tunnels, supporting safety monitoring and the prevention of service disruptions.
  • Healthy-building dashboards: Bring together live air-quality information and crowd-capacity data.
  • Energy optimisation: Honeywell Forge software can adjust HVAC operation according to occupancy, weather conditions and time of day.

A Saudi example of Honeywell’s energy-management work is Mouwasat Medical Services, which contracted the company for hospital-wide Forge Energy Optimization.

Riyadh’s hot climate makes cooling and ventilation particularly important. Predictive HVAC controls can help manage one of the significant operating costs of a metro system while maintaining comfortable conditions for passengers.

Honeywell’s Financial Position

Honeywell is a large US-listed industrial technology group with operations across multiple sectors. Its market value and revenue change over time, and its business structure has been undergoing reorganisation into separate businesses.

Its financial performance is therefore an important part of understanding the company’s position in industrial automation, smart buildings and infrastructure technology.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is Riyadh Metro?

The network spans 176 kilometres, with six lines and 85 stations.

What does a master systems integrator do?

A master systems integrator connects different systems, including security, fire protection, ventilation, electrical power and passenger facilities, into a coordinated control platform.

Why is smart building technology important for Riyadh Metro?

Integrated monitoring helps operators manage station equipment, improve safety, monitor environmental conditions and optimise energy use in a demanding climate.

Honeywell’s building automation capabilities illustrate how industrial technology can support the complex infrastructure required to operate a modern urban railway.
