Nigeria’s Sovereign Wealth Fund Targets Local AI Infrastructure Expansion

The Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority is making strategic bets on domestic hyperscale data centers to meet the demand for cloud infrastructure and storage capacity generated by artificial intelligence.

The KASI Hyperscale Data Centre will provide an alternate source of cloud computing, storage, and graphics processing units in Nigeria.

A 100-megawatt capacity is expected to make it one of the largest AI data centers on the continent.

The NSIA believes that reducing reliance on cloud service providers located outside the country will help conserve foreign exchange.

The same objective is expected to be achieved by using the NSIA Prize for Innovation and a $50 million fund to support startups in the banking, telecommunications, health, education, and government sectors.

It is anticipated that the new data center campus will offer shared infrastructure and not be tied to exclusive clients.

The sovereign wealth fund will provide a public good in the form of digital infrastructure and computational capacity.

The NSIA views data and compute as utility and an enabler of jobs and economic growth.

If the forecast demand is met, the KASI hyperscale complex can position Nigeria as a key player in meeting the continent’s needs in AI infrastructure and cloud computing.
