Pratyush Kumar: CEO and Co-Founder of Sarvam AI

Pratyush Kumar is an Indian computer engineer, researcher and entrepreneur who serves as CEO and co-founder of Sarvam AI, a Bengaluru-based company developing artificial intelligence technology for India. With a background spanning electrical engineering, computer systems and Indian-language AI, Kumar has played an important role in building technology that addresses India’s linguistic diversity.

Before co-founding Sarvam AI in August 2023, he worked with IBM Research and Microsoft Research, helped establish AI4Bharat at IIT Madras and co-founded One Fourth Labs, the company behind the PadhAI learning platform.

Pratyush Kumar’s Education

Kumar earned a Bachelor of Technology degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay). He later completed a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering at ETH Zurich in Switzerland in 2014.

His education gave him a foundation in computer systems and hardware, which he later combined with research and development in artificial intelligence. His career demonstrates how expertise in engineering can contribute to the development of large-scale AI products and language technologies.

Research Career at IBM and Microsoft

Kumar spent approximately three years at IBM Research and two years at Microsoft Research. These roles exposed him to advanced computing research and the development of technologies with practical applications.

He later joined IIT Madras as adjunct faculty, combining academic involvement with his work in AI research and entrepreneurship. His research and development experience spans more than 15 years, and a conference biography has credited him with more than 89 research papers.

AI4Bharat and Indian-Language Artificial Intelligence

In 2019, Kumar co-founded AI4Bharat at IIT Madras with researchers including Mitesh Khapra and Anoop Kunchukuttan. The initiative focuses on open-source artificial intelligence tools and resources for Indian languages.

One of its notable developments was IndicBERT, a multilingual model published in 2020 that covers 12 Indian languages. Work of this kind addresses a major challenge in artificial intelligence: many existing models have been trained heavily on data from widely represented languages, leaving other languages with fewer resources.

Kumar’s work in Indian-language AI is intended to help reduce that gap and make AI technologies more accessible to people across India.

He also co-founded One Fourth Labs, which developed the PadhAI platform. The platform provided deep-learning education to more than 100,000 students, making technical learning available at a relatively low cost.

Pratyush Kumar and Sarvam AI

Kumar co-founded Sarvam AI with Vivek Raghavan in August 2023 and serves as its CEO, overseeing product and technology strategy.

The Indian government selected Sarvam to develop India’s first sovereign large language model under the IndiaAI Mission. Its product portfolio includes Sarvam-M, Sarvam Vision and the Bulbul V3 voice model, which supports 11 languages. Sarvam Vision has also been reported to perform strongly against major AI systems, including Gemini and ChatGPT, on Indian-language optical character recognition (OCR).

The company has also established Sarvam Labs in the San Francisco Bay Area as part of its broader research and technology presence.

The Challenge Behind His AI Mission

Kumar’s research addresses the uneven distribution of data used to train AI systems. He has highlighted how much of the AI boom of the 2010s relied on data representing a relatively small proportion of humanity, even though the resulting systems were deployed worldwide.

This challenge helps explain Sarvam AI’s focus on Indian languages, local data and sovereign AI infrastructure.
