Airtel Africa Foundation Expands Financial Support for Women Across Africa

The Airtel Africa Foundation is stepping up efforts to improve financial inclusion for women across Africa, with new programmes designed to help women strengthen their businesses, gain better access to financial services and build more sustainable livelihoods.

As part of the expansion, 500 women in Zinder, Niger, have completed a 10-day training programme focused on business management, financial planning and digital financial tools.

The participants, who are involved in agri-food processing and pottery, were trained on practical ways to manage their businesses more effectively, make informed financial decisions and improve the resilience of their livelihoods.

Empower Her Programme Reaches More Than 2,000 Nigerian Women

In Nigeria, the Foundation’s Empower Her initiative has so far reached 2,050 women across six states, combining financial literacy and business development training with access to digital financial services.

The programme also supports participants through Smartcash onboarding, grants and agent banking opportunities, giving women more tools to participate in the formal and digital economy.

Beyond teaching financial skills, the initiative is focused on tackling one of the major challenges facing many women entrepreneurs: limited access to the financial services and business opportunities needed to grow their enterprises.

Financial Inclusion at the Centre of Women’s Economic Empowerment

The Foundation’s approach is tailored to the specific needs of different communities rather than relying on a single model across Africa.

The broader goal, however, remains the same, using financial inclusion to give women greater control over their finances, strengthen their businesses and create more opportunities for long-term economic independence.

The programmes are part of the Airtel Africa Foundation’s FEED strategy, which places financial inclusion at the centre of efforts to promote sustainable livelihoods, stronger small businesses and more inclusive economic growth across the continent.

With women playing a major role in small businesses and local economies, initiatives that combine financial knowledge with real access to funding and digital financial services could help more entrepreneurs move beyond simply running their businesses to building enterprises capable of lasting growth.
