Amazon Faces Pressure After Deadly Fire at Indian Delivery Partner Facility

Global e-commerce giant Amazon has announced that it will take action against one of its third-party delivery partners in India after authorities complete an investigation into a deadly warehouse fire that claimed the lives of two workers.

The incident, which occurred on June 5 at a facility operated by M&M Logistics Solutions in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, has raised fresh concerns about workplace safety standards within the country’s rapidly growing e-commerce logistics industry.

Amazon Launches Internal Review Following Fatal Fire

Amazon confirmed that it has initiated its own internal investigation into the incident while awaiting the outcome of the ongoing police probe.

In a statement, the company said it would take “appropriate action” against the delivery partner if violations of company policies or safety standards are confirmed.

The facility involved in the incident was operated by M&M Logistics Solutions, a third-party logistics provider that handles package deliveries for Amazon across several cities in northern India.

According to information obtained from local authorities, the warehouse reportedly lacked several critical safety requirements, including valid fire safety clearance, functioning fire alarms, smoke detectors, and proper emergency exits.

The fire resulted in the deaths of two workers and has sparked renewed scrutiny of safety practices among logistics contractors serving major technology companies.

Workplace Safety Concerns Return to Spotlight

The latest incident has intensified concerns about labor conditions and worker protection within India’s e-commerce supply chain.

The Amazon India Workers Union has called for an independent judicial investigation into the deaths, describing the incident as a serious failure of workplace safety and worker protection.

The union argued that the tragedy highlights broader issues surrounding employee welfare and occupational safety standards within the logistics sector.

Amazon, however, reiterated that employee safety and wellbeing remain among its highest priorities and stated that it expects all partners and contractors to comply with strict safety requirements.

Amazon’s Vendor Policies Allow Suspension or Termination

Although M&M Logistics Solutions operates as an independent contractor, Amazon’s supplier and vendor code of conduct requires all partners to maintain safe working environments and comply with workplace safety regulations.

The company’s policies specifically prohibit unsafe conditions, including inadequate fire prevention measures and emergency preparedness failures.

According to Amazon’s guidelines, contractors found to have violated safety standards can face suspension or permanent termination of their business relationships with the company.

M&M Logistics Plays Major Role in Amazon’s Northern India Operations

M&M Logistics Solutions has been a significant logistics partner for Amazon in India. Company records show that the firm operates approximately 45 Amazon delivery centers across 21 cities throughout northern India.

The company handles a substantial portion of Amazon’s regional package deliveries, making the investigation particularly significant for Amazon’s operations in one of its largest international markets.

Local authorities in Uttarakhand have not yet released the final findings of their investigation, and representatives of M&M Logistics have not publicly commented on the allegations.

Amazon Continues to Face Labor and Safety Scrutiny in India

The fatal fire comes amid ongoing scrutiny of Amazon‘s labor practices in India.

In recent years, the company has faced investigations and complaints related to worker welfare, including concerns raised during severe heatwave conditions at warehouse facilities near New Delhi.

As investigations continue, the latest tragedy is expected to intensify discussions around workplace safety regulations, contractor oversight, and corporate responsibility within India’s booming e-commerce industry.
