WhatsApp Begins Global Username Reservations to Boost User Privacy and Hide Phone Numbers
WhatsApp has officially begun rolling out global username reservations, introducing one of its biggest privacy updates in recent years. The new feature is designed to let users communicate without sharing their personal phone numbers, giving them greater control over who can contact them.
The reservation process started on June 29, allowing eligible users to secure their preferred usernames before the feature becomes available to everyone through a wider in-app rollout later this year.
WhatsApp Usernames Will Replace the Need to Share Phone Numbers
With the upcoming feature, WhatsApp users will be able to connect by sharing a unique username instead of their mobile number. This is expected to improve privacy, particularly for users interacting in community groups, online marketplaces, public forums, or with people they do not know personally.
Unlike usernames on traditional social media platforms, WhatsApp usernames are built with privacy in mind. There will be:
- No public username directory
- No username search suggestions
- No public profiles based on usernames
Someone will only be able to contact you if they already know your exact username.
Reservations Open Ahead of Global Rollout
Although username reservations have now started, the complete feature is expected to roll out gradually over the coming months.
Users whose accounts become eligible will receive an in-app notification inviting them to complete their username setup.
To reserve a username, users should:
- Update WhatsApp to the latest version.
- Open Settings.
- Select Account.
- Tap Username.
- Choose an available username and reserve it.
The feature will become available country by country during the phased rollout.
Extra Security Features Included
WhatsApp is also introducing additional safeguards to prevent misuse and impersonation.
Users can optionally create a Username Key, which adds another layer of protection. Anyone attempting to contact them through their username will also need to know this private key before a conversation can begin.
Even after usernames are introduced, existing privacy tools will remain available, allowing users to block or report unwanted contacts and suspicious messages.
Username Rules and Restrictions
To reduce impersonation and improve security, WhatsApp has introduced several rules for usernames.
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Maximum length | Up to 35 characters |
| Must be unique | Yes |
| Public directory | No |
| Username suggestions | No |
| Optional Username Key | Yes |
| Impersonation protection | High-profile names will have restrictions |
These limitations are intended to make usernames more secure while reducing the chances of fake accounts pretending to be public figures or well-known organizations.
Meta Wants Consistent Digital Identity Across Its Platforms
For creators, businesses, and organizations, WhatsApp will also allow users to claim the same username they already use on Instagram or Facebook where available.
The move is expected to make it easier for brands and creators to maintain a consistent identity across Meta’s platforms while still benefiting from WhatsApp’s privacy-focused messaging system.
WhatsApp Says the Feature Was Built Around User Feedback
According to WhatsApp‘s Head of Product, Alice Newton-Rex, the feature was created in response to growing demand from users who wanted more privacy when communicating.
She explained that many people are uncomfortable sharing their personal phone numbers, especially when participating in large group chats or speaking with people they do not know. The new username system gives users more control over how they connect with others while keeping their phone numbers private.
With more than three billion users worldwide, the introduction of usernames marks one of WhatsApp’s most significant privacy updates, offering a safer and more flexible way for people, businesses, and creators to communicate without exposing their personal contact details.
