GenScan AI Wins $100,000 NLNG Science and Innovation Prize

Nigerian AI researcher Mary Brenda Akoda has been named winner of the 2026 Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation for GenScan AI, a system that dramatically reduces time spent in magnetic resonance imaging scans.

The technology uses advanced reconstruction algorithms that reduce acquisition duration by as much as 90 percent without requiring new MRI hardware.

Judges selected the entry from a record 237 submissions, putting the technology ahead of a large field of competing scientific and innovation projects.

Akoda previously worked in AI research roles at Microsoft, including mixed-reality laboratories.

The $100,000 prize will be formally presented at an award night scheduled for October.

Medical imaging specialists who reviewed early descriptions of the system note that shorter scan times could increase patient throughput and reduce the physical discomfort associated with long periods inside the machine.

The innovation arrives while Nigeria continues to face shortages of functional high-end imaging equipment outside major urban centres. In that environment, improving the efficiency of existing equipment could be particularly valuable if the technology eventually reaches routine clinical use.

Discussions in local tech and health research groups have focused on how quickly the algorithm can move from validation studies into routine hospital use.

Questions around clinical validation, hospital integration and performance across different MRI systems will remain important as the technology moves beyond recognition and toward wider deployment.

The win also elevates the visibility of Nigerian-led AI applications that target specific clinical bottlenecks rather than generic chatbot tools.

GenScan AI’s recognition therefore puts attention on a different side of the country’s AI story: using advanced computing to tackle specific healthcare problems where even a reduction in scan time could make a practical difference to hospitals and patients.
